There are two general types of breast implants, saline filled and silicone gel filled. There are two companies that manufacture breast implants that are currently approved by the FDA. Women under 22 years old are not eligible for the silicone gel filled implants, and can choose from a variety of profiles of the saline implants to help them achieve their goal in breast enhancement. Women 22 years old and older can choose from either the saline or silicone gel filled varieties. Implants come in a multitude of sizes ranging from as small as 100cc (cubic centimeters) and up to 800cc. In addition to the volume choices, there are also choices of implant “profiles”. The profile of the implant delineates how big around the implant is (diameter) in relation to how much projection the implant has, in other words how much it will protrude out from the chest wall. The choice of implant profile is best determined after the volume, or cubic centimeters of the implant are decided. During the typical consultation, Dr. Amy Bandy will go over the options with each person to help them determine which implant will be best to attain the results that she is looking for. Implants are available to see and touch, and can be used to size by trying them on during the consultation.
During a breast augmentation consultation, Dr. Amy Bandy will start with each person’s medical history, and history relating to the breast. If there is a family history of breast cancer, or a personal history of breast disease or problems, this may impact what recommendation that Dr. Bandy may make with placement of the implant. The size of the chest wall measured by the width of the breast, as well as the circumference of the chest relating to the bra size is taken into consideration when choosing an implant. Dr. Bandy carefully examines the breast, and determines whether the patient is looking more to achieve projection of the breast or cleavage, or if both are equally important. This helps in determining which size and profile the implant should be to best achieve each person’s goals.
