The typical patient requesting breast augmentation is in her 20’ to 40’s and has complaints about her breasts ranging from size to shape.  Many of these women have had children and breast fed and now feels that they have lost the volume in the upper pole of her breast and that the breast appears flatter on top.  Some women want implants mainly to increase their size, but many women are looking for implants to provide a more youthful, fuller breast like they had before childbirth.  Some women can achieve their goal with breast augmentation surgery alone; however some women will need a breast lift to give them the best possible results.

Women with minimal to no breast tissue who are thin and have minimal body fat may want to consider the silicone gel implants.  Silicone gel implants tend to have a lower rate of implant visibility and rippling which can occur along the outer sides of the breast, as well as the upper margin.  Silicone gel implants tend to feel and move more like a natural breast, as long as there is not any hardening of the implant capsule.

The “capsule” is the scar tissue that surrounds the implant.  A capsule will form in response to the body recognizing that there is a foreign object in the body.  A capsule is normal; a capsular contracture is not.  A capsule is graded according to how soft or hard the capsule is, and whether or not there is disfigurement or pain associated with the capsule.  Women with capsular contractures may need to have surgery to remove the scar tissue and exchange the implant, depending on whether or not it is painful, and whether the looks of the breast is an issue.

Capsular contracture rates vary from surgeon to surgeon.  Unfortunately, there is no “one reason” that a capsule will contract.  There are known risk factors that contribute to capsular contracture formation, however often times the reason it happens cannot be pin-pointed.  Dr. Amy Bandy is careful to use a “no-touch technique” when placing implants, and this is a contributing reason to the fact that her capsular contracture rates are very, very low.
